The photo collages in this series bring into conversation historical photographs with contemporary images of nature. Each of the historical black and white images in each collage is an image of an ancestor—or the imagined representation of lost ancestors. Additionally, the color images in the collages are photographs that were taken in locations associated with each of the historical figures. With this work, I have attempted to imagine and visualize the persistence of ancestors in one’s life. My series of images includes absences and erasures where stories have been suppressed, as in the case of cultures and ways of life that were nearly destroyed. Additionally, the collages also include my own, sometimes ironic, retelling and re-envisioning of historical narratives. As a whole, the images reflect the multitudes and contradictions that have contributed to the messy present of American identity.
